Lipgloss - 7" glitter white label: ISC 567

Pictured Right

A. Lipgloss
B. You're A Nightmare

» This transparent silver glitter white label originated from the Orlake pressing plant during 1996 and was sold on eBay for £30 in September 2001. The story behind its existence started when a small record label contacted the plant to enquire about the costs of pressing a special edition glitter 7". As the label was unable to decide on the many colours of glitter available, Orlake agreed to send them some samples and pressed five records, each one with a different colour of glitter. By chance, the stampers for the Pulp 7"s were still in place and were used to press the five samples. The label only realised what they had been given when they played the one remaining record five years later and discovered, to their surprise, that it was a pressing of Pulp's Lipgloss.

» Some of these promo CDs were issued in an A5 envelope and included a fold-out sewing pattern. Pictured below right - not to scale.

Release Sticker:
"PULP's second single of the year on Island Records is a double A-side. The two tracks are entitled "MIS-SHAPES" and "SORTED FOR E's AND WHIZZ" [sic] otherwise just known as "SORTED". Both songs were first aired earlier this year when Pulp headlined Glastonbury. "MIS-SHAPES" takes it name from those biscuits which are rejected because they don't quite look up to scratch even though they taste just as good as the normal ones. And as you might have guessed this little number is about misfits, a tribute to all outsiders. Meanwhile "SORTED" is neither a pro or anti drugs song but more of an overview of the summer of love and festivals in general. PULP will be touring throughout the country in October."

Pictured Right

1. Party Hard (single version)

Release Sticker:
And Party Hard it will be incase you didn't know; the tour rolls out around the UK in November and they've ever so slightly remixed this single. There's to be a special re-release of the album 'This Is Hardcore' with a bonus CD of their monumental Glastonbury performance...

Release Sticker:
Pulp prove why initial doubters of their current album are now eating their words with this, the strongest track of them all. The cheer leading video sees Jarvis pursuing a familiar theme of sexual frustration. "This Is Hardcore" has received a nomination for the "Mercury Music Prize" making Pulp the only band ever to have been nominated three times (they won in 1996) and it will be repackaged in a special limited edition double album format including this year's rousing performance at "Glastonbury". (Released 14th September)

» A monumental display of ineptitude, this promo serves as a reminder of the decline of a great record company. By 2001, Island were not even capable of putting together a promo CD of Pulp's live set at Homelands. The second track is totally mangled - it begins with the intro to Weeds then abruptly reverts to Jarvis' spoken introduction to the song which is then followed by 15 seconds of silence. Track 3 starts with the end of Sorted and ends after the start of Bad Cover Version and track four starts at the end of Weeds. This means that without editing, it's impossible to have an uninterrupted play of the gig from beginning to end. Such spoiling tactics could have been a ploy to deter bootleggers, but this CD-R was issued a month after Radio 1 had broadcast 80% of the same gig! On the plus side, the CD provides a superb document of an entire Pulp gig complete with all of Jarvis' chatter and with a sound quality superior to that of the Radio 1 broadcast.
