Party Hard

Performances in '98 were largely confined to the predictable series of music programmes, TFI, Top Of The Pops, another fantastic Jools Holland and snippets from the wonderful Glastonbury set. At the time, I felt a certain smugness at watching them mime This Is Hardcore on Top of The Pops. How brilliant it was that Pulp could get away with releasing a six and half minute porn-drenched single, thrusting it into the top 20 and then performing it on prime time TV in front of a bunch of teenagers. Subversive or what? Stranger still, this was the year that that loads of Pulp fans were wondering around in light blue T-shirts with dog pictures on them - do you reckon Jarvis ever took his off long enough to wash it? No, me neither. TFI went all PC on us and edited out the "shed his load" bit from Party Hard (though we've heard worse from Jarvis). And just as winter arrived in England, it was off to Australia, where Jarvis & Nick showcased their TV presenting skills on a crazy - no, loony - Saturday morning youth programme. All in all, a pretty decent year on the telly, though not if you don't like Party Hard and A Little Soul.

Jarvis Interview

The arse-end of the year saw a flurry of Help The Aged promotion which also served to gently lever the band back into the minds of the public. Other than a couple of Top of The Pops appearances and a TFI slot, the rest of the TV work was on interviews, many of which seemed to feature the same sofa and coffee table, making it look like the presenters and journalists had to chase after Pulp, not the other way round.

A bit of a 'hangover' year promotion wise - Something Changed being the last single from Different Class - 1996 left Pulp to get on with tours across Europe, America and Japan, with some early TV appearances in France, Germany, Italy & Sweden.
Their live performance at the Brit Awards was completely, utterly and absolutely overshadowed by the other events of the night. For Sorted, Mark was up on keyboards, Pete Mansell & Danny Doyle were dancing around as shell-suited 'geezers' and the back of the stage was packed with loads of doved-up ravers. Jarvis started singing from within the audience and he gradually strolled towards the stage meandering his way through the dining music executives. By the end of the song, he's hoisted up to the ceiling on metal wires for the final vocal "what if you never come down?" It’s daftness was of Spinal-Tap proportions. As is the nature of these events, we weren't allowed to see the ceremony broadcast live since the best bits had to be left on the cutting-room floor. However, such was the controversy of the Jarvis "incident", coupled with Liam's exemplary behaviour, that an unedited broadcast was deemed necessary. Hurrah! Justice (and notoriety) for Jarvis was finally achieved.
An appearance on Chris Evans' new TFI Friday show (which was very fine in it’s early days) gave Jarvis a chance to set the "Jackson" record straight via a satellite interview from a Manchester dressing room on their arena tour. Later in March, Pulp appeared again to promote new single Something Changed. In April they jetted off to the US (minus Nick who was busy getting married) to lay the ground for their first proper US tour in May.
Pulp's 18-month long spell in the public eye finally came to a close with their appearance at the Mercury Music Prize award ceremony in London. It was the last significant event they were seen at before returning to ground for a well earned rest. Their performance of Bar Italia (the first ever and last ever Bar Italia TV performance according to the band) was a fitting choice of song for the ceremony, which not only reflected the atmosphere of the night, but also symbolically but a very weary full stop on their 12 month Different Class campaign (It was 346 days since their opening show at the Morecambe Dome the previous September). As the judging of the prize was done on the night, it wouldn't surprise me if this beautiful rendition of Bar Italia had swung the balance of votes in their favour. The prize was prestigious, their reputation immaculate. Different Class - the album now 'officially' recognised for its outstanding achievement.

You only have to glance down the list of outstanding performances for this year to realise two things: firstly, that Pulp earned whatever paycheque they received twenty times over, and secondly, that it was a truly fantastic, if exhausting, year for the band.
Of course, things started off quite modestly with a couple of early DC tracks performed on Channel 4's White Room. It wasn't until the release of Common People that everything went supersonic, I mean, Richard & Judy... bloody hell! Onwards and upwards to Glastonbury where Jarvis announces a new song called Sorted after which they debut another untitled song about a girl called Deborah in the year 2000. Crazy!
Add all this to a couple of ace MTV shows, a surreal performance of Mis-Shapes on The Big Breakfast, six Top Of The Pops appearances (six!!), two Live & Kicking performances, that Common People performance on Britpop Now, and that set on Later and it's not really that difficult to see why Different Class sold shitloads.
Their set on Later - broadcast the week that Different Class went to number 1 - was groundbreaking... that orchestra!... that passion!... that showmanship! - it was unbeatable. December '95 provided the most intensive Pulp televisual feast ever attempted... Top Of The Pops, Live & Kicking, Smash Hits Awards, Jack Dee Show and climaxing with a BBC documentary (documentary for Christ's sake!) and another performance of Common People on the Christmas day Top Of The Pops! By 1996, even your grandma knew of Jarvis Cocker, and thanks to her star appearance in No Sleep 'till Sheffield, we all knew Jarvis' nan too... "I just hope and prey he doesn't do anything silly". Seriously though, after a year like this, would you blame them for going mental? The revolution was televised.

Sandwiched by two concerts for ITV's The Beat, 1994 provided tonnes of live concert footage, which if nothing else demonstrated just how talented Russell Senior really is at squeaking that violin. Pulp finally made into the TV hall of fame with their debut appearance on Top Of The Pops, now remembered for Jarvis' famous "I Hate Wet Wet Wet" sign. MTV's Most Wanted, shown the week that 'Do You Remember The First Time?' was released, gave the band a rare opportunity to play acoustic and although I've never seen the Acrylic Afternoons bit of the performance, I'll bet it's a real gem.

I've barely seen any of their stuff from '93, which is probably good, because the thought of seeing them play Stacks, Inside Susan and 59 Lyndhurst Grove is probably too much excitement to handle. For some reason, Channel 4 recently ran a "Best of The Word" show which featured Pulp playing Lipgloss, which was bizarre to say the very least. Aside from the fact that they all looked so much younger (kind of like they did in the original Babies video), the producers thought it would be cool to impose a swirling computer generated background over the back of the stage, which left me feeling a bit sea-sick.
UK Play have also repeated She's A Lady from the 'No Stilettos' show. This was tonnes better, and was even filmed in an old church which seemed rather appropriate for a His 'n' Hers track. It was as epic as you'd dare to imagine and Jarvis once again sang it with a unique set of lyrics. Here's a rough transcription of what he said... "Sick and tired, yes I did / Through the city, had a kid / Painted faces on a wall, pretended that my name was Paul / Tried to travel back in time, picked something that didn't rhyme / Fit trousers, with nothing underneath" Eh?

The New Sessions broadcast seems to be pretty untraceable, though I bet Mark Webber's got a stash of pristine copies on video hidden away somewhere! Watching the London T&C Stage One concert makes you realise how much Pulp have changed, yet how much they've essentially stayed the same. It's a contradiction that makes perfect sense. Okay, so their faces all look much younger, (Nick looks positively teenage-like!) and the songs they performed are ones we could only dream of hearing today, but Russell and Jarvis' on-stage mannerisms are immediately recognisable. The concert was a first for Pulp in quite a significant way, and in a way which most of us will have suffered from at some point since... Jarvis: "Bit disappointed nobody's tried to storm this little barrier here... first time we've had one of them, must say, it's very nice isn't it? You could have a creche down there. These bars - y-know - just get a few balls in there, nice little bendy toys - bring your kiddies along."

By no means exhaustive, this is a small selection of some great Jarv-TV moments...

Jarvis makes a few brief appearances as a talking head in Alan Yentob's documentary on Scott Walker: "The record that he did with us was called We Love Life - nobody bought it! I turned up at his manager's house to meet him and he was sat there and he had a baseball cap on - I didn't expect that. The peak of the cap was pulled down so I could only really see his mouth and we started talking. I played him some bits of music and then I was encouraged because as the conversation went on the brim kept kind of inching up and maybe after 35 minutes we actually made eye contact.".
Jarvis Cocker Talks To Kirsty Wark: BBC 4

Screened almost ten years to the day that Different Class was released, this half hour interview with BBC Newsnight's Kirsty Wark sees Jarvis questioned on a number of personal topics. What makes it all so compelling is that he responds with a significant degree of honesty and openness. Whilst all the usual subjects are discussed (childhood, Jarvis' dad, the effects of success) Wark's direct interview style at times makes for a brutally frank interview, particularly when discussion gets round to Jarvis' past drug use. Even when he talks about those subjects he's spent so many years being asked about already (e.g. the 1996 Brit Awards) he somehow manages to provide answers with added reflection and insight. Well worth tracking a copy down, even though he doesn't spill any beans about his new solo material.

A fun yet informative look at the history of pop TV, seen through the eyes of Jarvis. Whilst a venture of this sort could have gone horribly wrong, turning into one of those dreadful 'Top 10/25/50/100 TV Moments' programmes, the finished product is instead an engaging personal journey though the archives. But as Jarvis is keen to point out, it's not about nostalgia, "cause nostalgia is a mug's game". Spliced into ten short sections, Jarvis introduces his 'rules' of what makes great pop TV. Includes interviews with Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Jimmy Saville (a real highlight - unsurprisingly) and Status Quo, not to mention clips of Jarvis having a bath and tucking up into bed(!)

Jarvis and Richard Hawley accompany Nancy Sinatra for a rendition of 'Don't Let Him Waste Your Time', a song which Jarvis wrote for Nancy's new LP. Jarvis played acoustic guitar and provided backing vocals. Not only does he appear to have more hair than Nancy, but he's also sporting a fine scull 'n' crossbones belt as worn by the legendary Darren Spooner.

Jarvis does a live vocal of Help The Aged whilst Ali G, in his quest to liven up indie music, overdubs his drum 'n' bass samples alongside alternative rap vocals ("elp da mutha fookin aged"), rendering the song completely unrecognisable. Eventually Jarvis adopts Ali's style and the whole thing breaks up as Ali G shouts to Jarvis show me ya batty, show me ya batty! Must be seen to be believed.

Proof that expensive award ceremonies only exist for celebs to get pissed. Jarvis shuffles on to the stage and asks the audience if they like his new glasses. His response? "Yer should do, you paid for em!" And then... "What did the cannibal do after dumping his wife?" Answer: "Wiped his bum". Enough said.

Crazy celeb quiz show hosted by Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer. This is the Christmas show where Jarvis plays a 'blind' tug-of-war with a kitten, snaps a pencil to demonstrate his muscular abilities and ends up throwing Mini Baby Bells into Judy Finnigan's mouth, earning five English Pounds a hit. Crazy? Loony? Brilliant!

It's now compulsory to describe this event as the "legendary TV appearance where Jarvis single-handedly led his lame team to victory", which is true of course. But more than that, it was probably the first of many classic TV appearances which would cement Jarvis and Pulp into the psyche of a bleak nation. And the rest? Well, that's history. "We're making a move, we're making it now..."
